Why Choosing Contraceptives Changed My Life

Every September 26th is World Contraception Day.

So before you make the mistake of conceiving, read this article. As little as 5 to 10k can save you the stress and money of up to 250k or more

Why do I say this?

Very easy

Let me tell you a true story

Mrs A. doesn't like contraceptives. She tried one after having her third child and didn't like the way the injections messed with her hormones. I mean, she still had some post-pregnancy fat, so adding more weight was the last thing she wanted.

Aside from that, her period ceasing or not flowing enough was the last straw. Seeing her period always brought some form of relief that she was not pregnant. This was more than a welcome reminder.

However, after taking injections for two months, she decided to stop. She wasn't herself, and she already had enough on her plate dealing with crazy hormones, sleep deprivation, and constant breastfeeding.

So she decided to use the natural method.

Armed with her Flo app, a period and ovulation tracker for women that, by the way, had over 90% accuracy, what could go wrong? she said.

But you know, life always has a funny way of dealing with us.

Many years down the line, she didn't know how it happened, but she found herself in the exact situation she was trying to avoid.

How come?

Then the barrage of questions started trooping in.
Was it the exercise I started that changed my system?

Is it the fasting I embarked on that caused it?

Was it when I fell sick with typhoid and malaria?

But I wasn't really sexually active this month.

Or did my ovulation date change?

My period had been irregular.
Either way, the deed has been done, and she was definitely pregnant.

Okay, so what's the next step?

She definitely didn't want the baby. I mean, she was barely managing with the kids, and her financial status was not where she hoped it would be.

The best thing to do was to get rid of it. If only the situation were better, she might have considered keeping it. However, her decision was final. Merely thinking of the current price of diapers and baby food was enough to cement that decision. She usually told nursing moms she knew that she did not envy them, and she was glad she was through with childbirth.

Funny how that remark came back to bite where it hurts.
So, to that nagging question...

How to get rid of it?

To cut a long story short, she had to undergo two D&C. Apparently, the registered nurse did a terrible job at the first attempt and obviously didn't flush everything out!

My goodness, can this get any worse?

Still feeling the symptoms of pregnancy two weeks after the evacuation, another pregnancy test confirmed it was positive.,

In fact, the foetus was still intact!

What in the flipping foetal fudge did the nurse evacuate? Was it possible that it was two foetuses? Did I conceive twins? Oh my god!

How was this scan showing a sac that was unscathed?

Oh well. With a lot of heavy thoughts and an equally heavy mind, she decided to go through with another evacuation. After all, there was a possibility that the growing baby could have been tampered with. She consoled herself.

Second attempt, as we all know, failed again. By this time, Mrs A. was seriously doubting whether she should remove it again. By now, she was getting heavier, a puffy face, a humongous appetite that came with uncontrollable spitting.

Stuck between the devil and a deep blue sea

However, after gathering the little courage she had left, she decided she could not keep it. Bringing a baby into the world right now was not the best decision. She summoned her strength and sought another option.

There is a drug she could use. The Nurse told her, but it will really cost you.

She had already overspent, but right now she would do anything to get this situation over and done with. Let's get it over with. However, you're not touching or tampering with my intimate area again. Mrs A complained.

She managed to get the drugs along with the instructions on how to use them.

The drug worked well. More than expected. Within 48 hours, everything in her womb was expelled.

The pregnancy symptoms she felt gradually diminished until she started to feel like herself again.

That was a tough journey. She never wanted to experience that again. What a relief to be free again!

However, the journey was not over yet.

Along with expulsion, it brought about the issue of infection. Were there any retained products? Everything was simply a nightmare. I've meant I've been drinking hot water, using my hot water bottle on my tummy. I did everything I was supposed to. Why this again?

After one more pelvic scan, a urinalysis test, and a culture test were done, that's how Mrs A. spent the little she had left to treat the infection that normally comes along with Evacuations or miscarriages.

SO now, we tell the story of Mrs B.

Mrs B decided she could not go through the stress of conceiving in the first place and simply went to a nearby General Hospital center to choose a suitable family planning method.

She opted for an IUD, and within 10 minutes, it was inserted, and she was relieved from the stress of having to get pregnant.

The process was fast.

The cost was low

The pain was bearable.

She had 10 years to protect herself. And better still, she settled for the contraceptive that wouldn't affect her hormones.

End of story.

Summary

Mrs A and Mrs. B are the same person. Mrs B became the wiser version of Mrs A.

Right from conception, to pregnancy along with its various symptoms, the birthing, breastfeeding, and constantly nurturing a child to adulthood is a lot of work. And if you're not mentally, emotionally, and physically ready to bring a child into the world, don't take that risk because doing so is a lifelong commitment.

Find an appropriate contraceptive you can take to avoid all the unnecessary dramas. Don't be like Mrs A
