7 reasons your Acne isn't going away

Charcoal Facemask
Charcoal mask: Perfect for whiteheads, blackheads and impurities

Before you start wondering if the universe is against you or why a colony of bacteria has decided to make your face permanent residence, you need to ask yourself what you’re doing (or not) to make the acne persist.

Dealing with acne can be very terrible. And as someone with oily skin, I have first-hand experience of how frustrating the ordeal can be. I suffered from this disorder as a kid and way into adulthood, occasionally breaking out even in the present day. So I can assure you I’ve done a lot of trials and errors and I can confidently say you’re in the right place when it comes to how to defeat your acne.

Acne can last up to months if left untreated and the right steps are not taken to curb it.

So one major piece of advice!

Go for a test. That’s right. Visit a dermatologist. Get a food sensitivity test or what have you. An individual who did one found out that she was allergic to coffee and groundnuts/peanuts and the minute she stopped eating them, her skin started to clear right away. Everyone was amazed. It may cost you but I can assure you it would be worth it and eventually save you from a lot of stress.

Some people spend years or even decades trying literally every product or medication when all you could have done was book an appointment with a dermatologist. When you consider the amounts you’ve spent on prescriptions, drugs and skin care products, this will be the best option yet to embark on.

You don’t have the budget for tests you say?

Ok, no probs. There’s always a way out. Follow these tips and observe a relevant change in your facial skin. If after some trials you do not notice improvements, I highly suggest you approach the issue internally. This might result in you having to take antibiotics to rid of annoying bacteria in the system. So back to alternative remedies.

7 simple ways to tackle acne

YOU’RE PROBABLY LACTOSE INTOLERANT

This means; no dairy; no breakouts. People with lactose intolerance are unable to fully digest the sugar in milk. The condition is usually harmless, but its symptoms can be uncomfortable. Some of the symptoms include nausea, cramps, gas, bloating, or diarrhea within 30 minutes to 2 hours after consuming milk or dairy products.

YOU’RE NOT USING SALICYLIC ACID

Salicylic acid is a peeling agent that causes the shedding of the outer layer of the skin. Salicylic acid is used in the treatment of acne, dandruff, calluses and to remove corns and warts. This topical ingredient treats acne by reducing swelling and redness and unplugging blocked skin pores to allow pimples to shrink.

It treats other skin conditions by softening and loosening dry, scaly, or thickened skin so that it falls off or can be removed easily. Look for products like scrubs, washes or creams containing this ingredient.

YOU’RE NOT WASHING YOUR FACE TWICE DAILY

The urge to over-cleanse is common in those with oily or acne-prone skin. There's no need to wash your face more than twice a day. In fact, doing so may dry out your skin and do more harm than good.
Keep your face clean whether or not you have acne. It's important to wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells, and extra oil from your skin's surface.

YOU’RE NOT CHANGING YOUR PILLOWCASE WEEKLY

To prevent new breakouts from developing overnight, switch your pillowcase every few days to weekly. Do this more often if you regularly wear makeup or are particularly acne-prone.

Along with oil, a cotton pillowcase retains bacteria, dirt and allergens. A cotton pillowcase can irritate acne-prone skin unless you're washing or changing the pillowcase frequently. Replacing your pillows at least every one to two years and regularly washing pillows and cases is a good way to lower your chance of clogged pores and infection.

YOU’RE NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER

Drinking a few pints of water a day along with thorough cleaning of your skin allows the water to cleanse your skin and unclog any pores that have dirt and dead skin cells clogging and retaining moisture and skin health. By drinking more water, you ensure that you won’t suffer from severe pimples and acne. The more hydrated your skin, the less your pores will clog.

Normally the rule is to drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Ordinarily, a glass of water should contain 250 ml of liquid - That’s like 4 bottled water. But research has shown that you might need to drink more or less water according to your weight. So, the more you weigh the more water. I normally strive to drink about 10 glasses every day (sometimes failing woefully). But you get the point, drink more water and not just because you’re thirsty.

YOU DON’T HAVE A PROPER SKINCARE ROUTINE

During the day, your skin goes through a lot. A proper skin care regimen will include cleansing, toning, and moisturizing corresponding to your skin type. Wash your face. Morning and night, rinse your face water and rub a small amount of gentle cleanser between clean palms.
